About This Quote

The protagonist of the book, The Ship Who Sang , is a young girl named Vashti. She has to do her chores with her father, but she is otherwise left alone for months at a time. One day, she catches the attention of an alien hunter, who invites her to come with him to his home planet. At first she refuses, because she wants to see her family again, but after much persuading she finally decides to go with him.

He promises to take care of her and protect her from harm. Just as they start their journey away from Earth, the alien hunter starts to lose his strength and begins to vomit blood. Vashti tries to help him by using a knife to slit his throat in order to spill out some blood so that he might survive the trip in space.

However, when this fails in saving him, she pleads with him not to die in space. Despite all of Vashti’s efforts, he dies in space and his body quickly shrinks down into nothingness.
